The Rocks Markets
George Street, The Rocks
Open 10am to 5pm, Saturdays and Sundays
One of the must-dos in Sydney alongside that close encounter with the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House is a trip down The Rocks, just north of Circular Quay. That visit through Australia’s historical past is ideal on weekends, where the cobbled streets are buzzing with happy people out for a good day.
Australian arts and crafts, accessories, home ware and all that jazz highlight the event that has become the melting pot of swarms and swarms of locals and tourists. The goods are generally unique, distinctly Australia and undeniably Sydney.
Start your exploration on the Metcalf Arcade side of George Street. The arcade itself offers specialty shops and the ever famous 24-hour restaurant, Pancakes on The Rocks.
Go around to the next row of stalls across that little touch of Irish and pause for some Guinness at the Mercantile Hotel at your leisure as you indulge your taste buds with the chocolates, nuts and specialty dips from the markets. Samples are generously offered so you get a taste of the deal right before you put your money in.
The markets continue on along Playfair Street, just adjacent to the main street. This leg of The Rocks experience is lined with more potential buys as well as some refreshments with reputations that have gone a long way.
Try those lush juicy strawberries encased in white, milk or dark chocolate and the sweet corn that locals have always queued up for. Completely refresh yourself with a big cup of fresh lemonade from none other than the fresh lemonade stand.
A day spent at The Rocks Markets is indeed a day well spent. There are lots of interesting finds that go well beyond that touristy thing. A true Sydney experience, a true Aussie experience. Afterall, that’s where it all began.
